Do you remember that ad: “Make friends with Kool-Aid” with a kid drinking Kool-Aid and other kids running to join in? Guess what? This is happening to me! But it’s not Kool-Aid that’s the magic magnet.

It’s … scrubs … those pants worn by medical care workers.

I’ve written before that my mom is living in a memory care facility. But I haven’t said, I visited and helped out so much that they hired me. I soon realized I needed lots of pockets to carry all kinds of things around while keeping my hands free. Scrubs have pockets everywhere! Plus, you can buy scrubs that don’t even look like scrubs! Or so I thought.

No. Scrubs are instantly recognizable. I soon found that when I wear scrubs, people stop and talk to me. They want to know where I work. They want to tell me where they work. They want to share stories. It doesn’t matter whether I am pumping gas, in the supermarket, or standing in line.

This is new. In my other day job I am/was a lawyer. We lawyers aren’t usually perceived as being warm and fuzzy. No one wants to just start swapping stories with us. Yet, it’s the same “me.” Just a different symbol leading to a different perception.

Jesus says “I need – that you will hear the words I speak and give them to the world. You are my voice, my eyes, my feet, my hands, through which I save the world.” (WkBk.Rv.511)

I know He isn’t really talking about what we look like or what we do. He is referring to the thoughts we think and project as we interact with others.

But if you’d like a neat trick to help ease the way, wearing scrubs is the way to go.
