The question came out of the blue. And it wasn’t about anything we had been discussing.

“Grandma Deb? Do you want me to make you a sign?”

His little four-year-old face turned to look at me expectantly.

“Sure!” I told him. “I would love for you to make me a sign. But what is the sign going to say?”

The answer came out of the blue, too: “Always try harder.”

His parents looked at each other and then looked at me with an expression that said, “We have no idea where that came from.”

I gave him a piece of paper and a pencil, but he paused. “You have to tell me the letters,” he said.

I did and one by one he printed them out. It was slow going. I wondered if he would stop before finishing. But, no. He paid attention to his own sign. And now – so am I.

Always try harder – to forgive; to forget; to drop the ego; to ask for guidance; to stop trying to be in control.

As Jesus tells us: “The real question still remains, What do you treasure and how much do you treasure it? Once you learn to consider these two points and bring them into all your actions as the true criteria for behavior…we can save a lot of time…” CE, C2, SIV, P13, L4-8.

Always try harder. It’s definitely a sign.
